Gladys Knight San Antonio Concert reviews
Love Her, Worried about Production
This was in a Casino venue with a nice stage and auditorium, however, the sound was overpowering to a point where we could not hear the vocals at times.
Gladys Knight is a consummate performer. She still has all the moves and relates beautifully to her audience, Her vocals are still wonderful and she knows how to tell a story through songs that not many newcomers have achieved.
Having seen her do a truly dynamic performance at Wolf Trap in 2018, by comparison, we worried that she may have had COVID or some other health issue that made her have to look at the large monitor to read her lyrics through many of the songs. This was hurtful to her performance. At the end of the concert she could not remember her band members' names when she was introducing them and for some reason her stage manager came out and helped her walk upstage through the band which was difficult for her. It was as if they realized she needed help all of a sudden.
Aside from the "gospel/church" part that became too long, she was brilliant to watch and hear. I hope she is okay and that her managers are not forcing her to do these shows when she is not able. Like Tony Bennett, when those lights hit her and the band starts to play, she lights up the stage. We worried about her, though.
